The Bay Area's first look at legendary playwright Harry Kondoleon's final comedy SAVED OR DESTROYED will be at the EXIT Café, 156 Eddy Street (btwn Mason and Taylor) in San Francisco, for six performances beginning Thursday October 2nd and continuing each Thursday through Saturday evening until October 11th. Showtime is 8:30pm with a running time of 75 minutes. Limited seating. All seats $20 at the door. Box Office opens at 8pm: 415.762.3649. EXIT Café offers a Beer, Wine and Bistro menu from 7pm.
SAVED OR DESTROYED celebrates the parallels and paradoxes of life and theatre with the reverence, irreverence, and insight that made Harry Kondoleon a mainstay of the New York stage until his untimely death in March 1994.
"The plot?
"A bunch of young, optimistic actors come together for a new play, where they are asked to portray a bunch of discontented actors, who are in turn portraying a bickering family on a seaside holiday. Then, it gets complicated . . . " 1
"It's more like a crazy mixed-up passion play or a three-dimensional collage than it is a traditional narrative....It dances and sings and bleeds from the eyes, spits nails and tickles you, refusing to sit still or be pinned down to one meaning or provide bromide answers for a sleeping audience." 2
A dozen Bay Area theatre artists have coalesced around Harry Kondoleon's death-bed manuscript to create an ethereal SAVED OR DESTROYED equally at home in a theatre or in a cabaret. The troupe actively seeks other bookings and offers sponsorship and advertising opportunities.
Val Hendrickson has staged plays on both coasts, honored for Direction with a Villager Downtown Theatre Award for Sam Shepard's Action and a Dean Goodman Choice Award for Denis Johnson's Hellhound On My Trail. His penchant for nightclub-theatricals gave rise to the site-specific Café Plays, an all-star jazz band Suicide in B Flat and the bawdy barroom Bard of Sex Club Shakespeare.
